Discover the Legend Of Meirion
At each festival event learn more about the legend of Meirion and his struggle to harness the power of the magical Harlech Torc. Hear how the giant seahorses (the Morfeirch) try to steal the Torc and how Meirion is taken prisoner in their underwater realm. What will happen? Will the seventh wave take us all away or will Meirion and the Torc return to Harlech? Wale’s finest storytellers, performers and musicians tell the tale, a tale to treasure.
The Winter Festival was told on 2 December 2017
The magic started after dark with a Festival procession through the town to the castle. Pipers, the storyteller, the Knights of Ardudwy with flaming torches, children with lanterns, a fire dancer (Meirion) and the Cambrian Choir were all pursued by the fearsome Morfeirch – the giant seahorses. At the castle, Deuair (Ceri Owen Jones and Elsa Davies), played the ancient bray harp and crwth while Siân Miriam narrated the battle of Meirion and the Morfeirch.
The Spring Festival will take place on Harlech beach from 11am on Sunday 27th May 2018.
We invite the public to come to the beach to make a defensive line of Sea Castles against the advance of the Seventh Wave. There will be flags on the beach to mark a space for making a castle, and biodegradable lanterns will be supplied to light the castles as dusk falls. We will spend the day building the castles and they will all be photographed and filmed. They will be built below the tideline. As the tide advances and the sun sets our filmmaker will document the illuminated castles battle with the seventh wave.
Everyone is invited to bring a picnic and/or barbecue and stay on the beach for an evening campfire lit and attended by the Knights of Ardudwy. Join in the campfire session with professional Welsh musicians, singers and fire dancers. Our narrator Siân Miriam will tell the tale of Meirion, the Morfeirch and the Harlech Torc with the help of renowned puppeteer, Owen Davies.
From this day onwards there will be an opportunity to see the Harlech Golden Torc at the castle.
The Autumn Festival will be on the weekend of 27 October 2018
October brings the final confrontation of Meirion and the Morfeirch in the castle, where the plight of our sea becomes clear to the people of Harlech. Under Meirion’s leadership they resolve to heal the damage done and take to care of this precious resource. A celebration is held to confirm this promise.
